Community Health Promotion Project
Background
The Community Health Promotion Project is a pilot initiative in eastern Shan State, specifically in the Wa-administered region. It was initially developed through a collaboration with the Cleft Lip and Palate Project, where it was found that the incidence of congenital disabilities among children in the Wa community was significantly higher than in other ethnic groups.
To improve community health, the project focuses on:
- Maternal and child healthcare
- Household hygiene and sanitation
- Nutrition education
Key activities include:
- Training pregnant mothers on self-care
- Nutritional education
- Promoting household hygiene practices
However, in 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic restricted travel and communication with the Wa community in Myanmar. As a temporary solution, the project shifted to Thailand’s Mae Pun Luang village, promoting traditional weaving among women and youth. This initiative aimed to:
- Preserve cultural traditions
- Provide additional income for women
- Create a support network for faith-based encouragement
- Spread the Christian message among Wa women in Myanmar
